GURPS WebWorlds
World Template

NOTE: For this template we are assuming that each dimension will have only one world in it. Some designers may want to define more than one different world within their dimension. This will be handled by an additional template submitted for each world. The details are mentioned at the end under the Section Heading "Special Conditions."

GENERAL DIMENSION: (req)

  • Project: The official name of the dimension or dimension project. This title may be different from the actual name of the world, if the designers choose it to be.
  • Designers: All the designers who will have authority in the dimension's design and development.
  • Member Cluster: The name of the Cluster (or Dimensional Region) which the world is a member of (or would like to be a member of). If the dimension has not been OK'D for within the Cluster specified, please indicate "proposed".
  • Worlds: Names of the worlds in this dimension are listed here (even if there is only one). If there are many worlds as yet undefined then indicate how many worlds. For specific details, see the Section "Special Conditions" below.
  • Genre: The general genre of the dimension.
  • Baseline: The main idea or concept of the dimension summed up in just a few short lines.

CONNECTIONS: (opt)

  • Give a brief description of how common dimensional travel is in the dimension and maybe how it works in the dimension. (See Connections in the cyclopedia.)

TECHNOLOGY: (opt)

  • Tech Level Range: Give the dimension's tech level; if the dimension is between tech levels, then indicate (in the following manner) the Lowest TL available, then the Average TL, then the Highest TL available in the format: LO TLx, AV TLx, HI TLx
  • Maximum Tech Level: The highest possible TL the dimension will allow such that if a traveller enters the dimension with higher TL item than the Max TL here, the item does not function (as an example).
  • Exceed Max Tech: What happens if a traveller brings in technology at a TL which exceeds the Maximum Tech Level of the dimension.
  • Special Notes: Any unusual or special circumstance regarding technology which the dimension does or does not allow to happen for any reason. Example: Build an iron golem, add lightning, it lives! or Guns don't hurt mages, etc.

MAGIC: (opt)

  • Magic systems: Magic systems commonly used in this dimension like Voodoo, Magic Words, Spells, invent your own and name it here! If you do invent a new system, there is no need to define it here, just give it a name.
  • Mana Level: Give the dimensions mana level here. If the dimension features variations of mana levels, indicate that such variations exist, or give a range of mana levels, like the TLs above.
  • Special Restrictions: Name specific types of magic systems which do not function as they should in the dimension and briefly describe the effects of trying to use that particular form.
  • Special Notes: Any special circumstance regarding magic which the dimension does or does not allow to happen for any reason; like the Tech Special Notes.

PSIONICS: (opt)

  • Local Types: Psionic powers or abilities which do exist in the dimension which are not brought in by travellers.
  • Max Level: Maximum psionic power level which can function in this dimension.
  • Exceed Max Psi: What happens when a traveller attempts to use psionic powers or abilities at a power level which exceeds the Max Psionic Level of the Dimension.
  • Special Notes: Any special circumstance regarding Psionics which the dimension does or does not allow to happen for any reason, and the side effects involved.

RELIGION: (opt)

  • Religious Systems: Types of Religions common in this dimension. Possibilities include Polytheist, Shamanic, Totemic, Monotheist, and Pantheist.
  • Religious Powers: Give a description of the powers available to the practitioners of the different religious types. Give an overview of the requirements to possess these powers.
  • Hostile Religions: Describe types of religions which will have problems in this dimension. Briefly describe the specific problems and reasons for them.
  • Special Notes: Any special circumstance regarding religion which the dimension does or does not allow to happen for any reason; like the Tech Special Notes. Also any special information about general cosmology, deities, or the afterlife.

RACES: (opt)

  • Denizens: Those races which are denizens of the Dimension (just names, not description).
  • Varieties Allowed: This is to indicate how many different races are on the world (a number or a range or just state "many"). If you allow, others may design and propose races for the Dimension; this is the category to state any racial design specifications or restrictions.
  • Special Notes: Any additional items in particular which effects races or the design of races in general; Including the racial traits of the races of this dimension or a traveller's dimension when the traveller enters this dimension (or vice versa). Example: All races of this dimension have an Arete attribute, and all Mages entering the dimension gain an Arete attribute.

SYNOPSIS: (req)

  • An overview of the dimension encompassing key elements of it's design, what you are looking to create in terms of the worlds, themes, adventures, and ideas in general (etc.).

SPECIAL CONDITIONS: (opt)

  • This template was designed primarily with the idea of one-planet dimensions or one-world dimensions in mind. In the cases where there is effectively more than one world in a dimension, then this is where you state the type of multiple world variations in your dimension. I have thought of two fundamental variations which are mentioned below. If you think of something different than these, then invent something and we will work something out.
  • Multi-Planar: If your world has alternate "dimensions" within it or alternate "planes of reality" (as I call them) or sub-dimensions, then indicate them here. Depending on how complete these alternate planes are you have the option to (and will probably want to) describe them with the same template you used to describe your dimension as is appropriate.
  • Space-faring: Like Multi-Planar except that you have a case of multiple planets in a single Dimension which are travelled to by spacecraft or other technological means. Treat each planet as a different world if you need to (like in Multi-Planar).
  • Notes: You may, if you choose, treat the whole dimension (including either alternates planes or planets) as one world, and view the template as an inter-planar/interstellar average and overview, just leaving out more specific details. Either way you handle it, please state here how you are applying the template such that others can follow it.
