N'Ferra's PBEM campaign started in November of 1997. Unfortunately, I proved unable to handle the duties of GM and was forced to cancel the campaign. In January 2000 I restarted the game, focusing on a single storyline instead of multiple ones. I later discovered that my GMing style is not suitable to PBEMs, so the PBEM is dead until my style changes. Past game information can be found below, along with the FAQs for the previous games.
If you haven't checked out the N'Ferra pages (starting with http://www.meanspc.com/~jeff_wilson63/rpg/nf_frame.html) that's the place to start. If you have any questions once you've skimmed those, and read this, then let me know.
GURPS is used for the background system, and for conflict resolution. However, role-playing is far more important than a knowledge of GURPS. If you are not familiar with GURPS, almost all system activity occurs in the background. I can also develop the game stats for your character myself if that's what you want.
I prefer to discuss points after I hear the concept. I've been known to accept 100 point and 500 point characters in the same game, and have both have fun. Since it isn't likely that characters in the PBEM game will be starting together, point balance is even fuzzier.
If you're looking for some guidelines, 100 to 150 points indicates an experienced professional or a beginning hero. 350 points is about as good as you can get without having some stake in a power structure. 500 point individuals are known and noticed. 1000 point characters are likely to be involved directly with Ferris, the god of N'Ferra.
Turns are processed at least once a week. If I do not receive a post within one week of my posting to a story-line, I reserve the right to take control of your character until you get in touch with me. If you do not send out any mail in four weeks, you will be deleted from the general list until you inform me otherwise. I have been known to respond daily, but only guarantee weekly posts.
If there hasn't been a post in the storyline within a week, feel free to contact me to find out what the delay is. There will also be a weekly post which goes out to everyone associated with the game which is concerned with general events and rumors.
N'Ferra is intended for long-term roleplay. There are a huge number of events going on: military, economic, political, religious, and who knows what else. I will not set adventures, rather the characters will have to choose what they do. Characters willsometimes be forced along by events that happen elsewhere. Characters are free to break away from other characters and start their own story-lines, but I would prefer if this was done rarely.
I am looking for five active players in the game. I may accept more, and if my active players drop below this point I will ask for more.
Yes there is. The various entries are listed below.
I need to know what your character can do and what his/her goals are. That's it.
If you need a checklist, think about your character's race and profession. If the character has special powers, decide on type of powers. What sort of things can the character do with that power? Where did s/he get training? How old is s/he? What about goals? What is s/he doing right now?
GURPS is extremely flexible, and, while some things simply aren't possible, check with me if you want to able to do something or do more. There's likely a way to do it.
First of all, start off by skimming the races. The first paragraph should give you enough information to decide which races interest you enough to read in detail. From there, you can follow the links to whatever information interests you.
Of course, if you have any further questions I'll be happy to deal with them.
First of all, don't be afraid to be wordy. Unlike a face-to-face game you won't be interrupting anybody and the more you put into your posts the more you'll get out of them. Do try to use proper grammar and spelling, but don't let them get in the way of saying what you want to say.
Next, have goals and work towards them. This game is designed for active participation. If you don't actively try to do things, not much is likely to happen and you'll be wasting both your time and my own.
Finally, state your intentions, plans, and contingencies as well as your immediate actions. DON'T just say, "I go into the tavern." Say, "I enter the tavern planning to get a drink and a room and intending to ask about ways that I might earn a few bucks." That way I can concentrate on the things that your interested in. (With the second response I would mention the bodyguards talking shop at one table, but not worry about mentioning that there are perches for birds and dreamcatchers on the walls. While with the first the response would probably be the opposite.)
Any descriptive or historical information is fine to post on the web. I would prefer if you didn't put up your character's specific game stats, but I won't toss you out of the game for it.
Being an AOL user, I always have AOL's IM available when I'm online. You can also make arrangments to meet me in a chat room somewhere. Unfortunately my computer is good enough to handle much more than these two options.
At certain points I'll inform people that they have experience coming. The players will tell me what they want and I'll let them know what skills they improved and to what degree. It's helpful if characters mention what they're training in during "down" periods.
The MERLOGH Imperium page covers a great deal of information about the realm (other than N'Ferra) where the campaign is currently happening. Also check out the MERLOGH WebWorlds Profile (upcoming).
I'm currently trying to set up access to a MUD which contains Base N'Ferra. Watch here for more information.
